This Privacy Policy explains how South Hams Reaction (“we”, “our”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you use our community board. We’re committed to keeping your data safe and using it only in ways you would reasonably expect.

Who we are

South Hams Reaction is the “data controller” for your information — meaning we’re the organisation responsible for how it’s handled.

The information we collect

When you create an account and use Reaction, we collect:

• Account information — your name, email address, area within South Hams, and (optionally) your profile photo and interests.
• Content you post — the events, activities, comments, and check-ins you create and respond to.
• Social activity — your friend connections, RSVPs, blocks, and reports.
• Push notification subscriptions — if you opt in, we store the device identifiers needed to send you notifications.
• Technical data — basic information your browser sends with every visit (IP address, browser type, the pages you view). We don’t use this to track you across other websites.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

• Provide the Reaction service and let you participate in it
• Show your posts, profile, and friendship activity to other users appropriately
• Send you the notifications you’ve opted into (push and email)
• Investigate reports and keep the community safe
• Improve the service and fix problems
• Comply with our legal obligations

Lawful basis for using your data

Under UK GDPR, we rely on the following lawful bases:

• Contract — we need to process your account information to provide the service you’ve signed up for.
• Consent — for optional things like push notifications and the email digest. You can withdraw consent at any time.
• Legitimate interest — for security, abuse prevention, and improving the service.

Who we share your information with

We don’t sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers needed to run Reaction:

• Vercel (hosting infrastructure) — processes your requests so the app can run.
• Neon (database) — stores your account, content, and activity.
• Resend (email delivery) — delivers any email notifications you’ve opted into.
• Web push services (Apple Push Notification, Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, Mozilla autopush) — deliver push notifications to your device if you’ve enabled them.

These providers act as “processors” on our behalf and are contractually bound to use your data only for delivering the service to you.

Other Reaction users can see the public parts of your profile (your name, area, posts, and RSVPs). Friends additionally see your notifications activity within the app. We do not display your email address to other users.

International transfers

Some of our service providers are based outside the UK. Where this applies, transfers are protected by the appropriate safeguards required under UK GDPR (such as Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision).

How long we keep your data

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we anonymise your personal details (name, email, photo) immediately. Some of your content (such as past event posts) may remain visible to other users in anonymised form so their own activity around it (RSVPs, check-ins) stays meaningful.

Push subscription tokens are deleted when you disable notifications or delete your account.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

• Ask us what information we hold about you
• Correct anything that’s wrong
• Ask us to delete your account and personal data
• Ask us to limit how we use your data
• Object to certain uses of your data
• Receive a copy of your data in a portable format

Most of these you can action yourself from within the app (editing your profile, deleting your account). For anything else, write to hello@southhamsreaction.co.uk and we’ll respond within one month.

If you’re not satisfied with how we’ve handled your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (the UK’s data protection regulator) at ico.org.uk.
